18th Annual International Yudh Gatka Sikh Martial Arts Tournament 2024 in Surrey

 According to Voice Online “ THE 18th International War Gatka Sikh Martial Arts Tournament is scheduled to take place on August 24 at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, promising a showcase of talent, honor and tradition.

Established in 2003, this popular tournament is the oldest in the world and has become a staple of the global gatka community. The event will take place  and will attract gatka devotees from around the world, celebrating the rich heritage of Sikh martial arts.

When: Saturday, August 24, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, 7050 120 Street, Surrey

The tournament will consist of several competitions, which will highlight the tactical and artistic elements of gatka. Participants will engage in fierce battles and showcase their skills in various traditional forms, which will contribute to the colorful display of Sikh culture. With competitors coming from California, New York, Toronto, UK and Punjab, the audience should expect a global celebration of martial arts.

Highlights of the event:

  • Farhi Soti (Stick and Shield) Competition:
    • Singh and Kaur (Age 18-30):
      • 1st Place: $1,100 + Ancient Armor
      • 2nd Place: $800 + Ancient Armor
      • 3rd Place: $600 + Ancient Armor
    • The event showcases the dynamic and powerful techniques of drop and armor fighting, which characterizes the traditional training of Gatka warriors.
  • Single Kirpan Competition:
    • Singh and Kaur (Age 18-30):
      • 1st Place: $600 + Ancient Armor
      • 2nd Place: $400 + Ancient Armor
    • Participants demonstrate precision and mastery with the Kirpan, a symbolic weapon of Sikhism.
  • Chakar/Jal (Jal) competition:
    • Singh and Kaur (Age 15-17):
      • 1st Place: $500 + Ancient Armor
      • 2nd Place: $300 + Ancient Armor
    • The Chakar/Jal competition highlights the brilliance of perseverance and technique in jal combat, which gives a glimpse into the diversity of Gatka’s repertoire.
