According to KUTV “ Both the House and Senate unanimously approved House Joint Resolution 4, sponsored by Rep. Angela Romero (D-Salt Lake City) and Sen. Luz Escamilla (D-Salt Lake City), with members of the Sikh community in attendance.
The resolution notes that Sikhism is one of the largest religions in the world focused on "loving service to humanity," but "they have long faced oppression and discrimination throughout the world."
"[T]he state of Utah seeks to further the diversity of its community and afford all residents the opportunity to better understand, recognize, and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences of Sikhs to enforce laws for access to equal opportunity of humans, irrespective of their caste, creed, color, or appearance," the resolution states.
Just before the Senate passed the resolution, senators stood and gave the Sikh members in attendance a standing ovation.
The group posed for a photo in the hallways afterwards. Senate officials said they came from Utah and other places across the world, even as far away as India.
