Basics of Sikhi set up stalls to combat loneliness on Valentine's Day

According to Birmingham Live “ A Sikh group has set up stalls across the UK to spread the message of love and remind people they don't need to be in a relationship to celebrate Valentine's Day. Educational outlet Basics of Sikhi had volunteers handing out roses, balloons and leaflets on love in Sikhi and to make the point that love should be celebrated every day.

We spoke to Bhai Amandeep Singh, of Basics of Sikhi, who told us what the message of love is in the Sikh faith. He said: "In the Sikh philosophy we believe in celebrating love not just in an isolated way between two people, we celebrate love as we’re all connected, we’re all one. In fact, we celebrate this together every day in the house of the guru.

"That love is far greater because it’s based on togetherness, consciousness and oneness and when you have those principles underpinning a relationship of a community there’s a truth to that, that is far greater to be celebrated."  Volunteers have been talking to people about the concept of consciousness, connectedness and oneness. Bhai Amandeep added: "We're trying to break that mould that you’re licensed to celebrate Valentine’s Day only if you’re in a relationship with a person.

"Imagine if you’re on your own, feeling sad, looking at everybody else around you with a rose and somebody would come to you and talk to you about love and how we are all connected."

Bhai Amandeep said the feedback from people 'has been tremendously overwhelming'. Adding: "We just don’t know how much people are suffering in silence and when someone reaches out with a loving kind hand it makes the difference. It’s a principle rooted in the Sikh history.
