During times when hate has taken the throne,the Sikh community has always gone out of their way to make sure that they can help as many people as they can. They are the world’s good Samaritans and their compassion will be spoken about till the end of time.
1. Two Sikh brothers served chai and langar to protestors at India Gate.
The recent CAA protests have unified so many people, especially students who have been protesting for a very long time now. In order to make things better for the ones voicing their concerns regarding the new Citizenship Amendment Act, two Sikh brothers showed up to a protest at India Gate and served chai and langar to those present. Just two men from the Sikh community doing what they always do -- making life easier for others.
2. The Seva Food Bank in Canada feeds low-income families.
It is no surprise to anyone that Sikhs are an extremely important part of Canada’s culture. The Seva Food Bank came into being in 2010 and ever since then, their main agenda is to provide free meals to families who have low incomes. They even make sure they make changes to their menu based on the culture of the people they are feeding to make things even more convenient for them.
3. Gurdwaras opened their doors to riot victims in Delhi.
After the gruesome violence that took place in Delhi in areas like Babarpur, Maujpur, Seelampur and Vijay Park, gurdwaras opened their doors to those affected by the brutality. They provided them with shelter, food and most importantly, safety. The Sikh community never fails to watch out for their fellow human beings and with what is happening right now, this is one of the most important steps that they can take to ensure that people remain safe.
4. The Gurdwara Singh Sahib Sabha fed food to people who were hit by the Assam floods last year.
Be it man-made disasters or natural ones, Sikhs are the first ones in line to lend a helping hand. When Assam suffered one of the most devastating floods in 2015, it was not their government that came to their rescue but the Sikh community did. They provided thousands of people with food and made sure that no one was left out.
5. The Khalsa Aid is one of the biggest Sikh organisations that help people from all over.
The Khalsa Aid is a UK-based organisation that came into existence in the year 1999. Ever since then, they have been helping people from all over the world whenever disaster has hit them. To them helping others is their main goal and there have been times when they have put their own safety aside to achieve that goal. Langar Aid which is an extension of Khalsa Aid had their volunteers travel to the Iraq-Syria border and fed nearly 15,000 refugees.
6. When Sikhs bought water for double the price to provide it to drought-hit Maharashtra.
2016 was a dry year for the state of Maharashtra but that did not hinder the Khalsa Aid from coming to people’s rescue. Volunteers from the international organisation apparently bought water for double the price to provide the people of the affected areas.
7. Sikhs of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee came together to provide langar to flood-hit victims in Uttarakhand.
While the government was not able to care for its own people, the Sikhs of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee got together to serve langar to people whose livelihoods were destroyed by the floods in Uttarakhand in 2019.
8. Two Sikh men took off their turbans to save a man from drowning.
Everyone knows how holy the turban is to Sikh people. In spite of that being true, two Sikh men did not think twice before taking theirs off in order to help a man who was drowning in a canal in Chandigarh. The two brave men tied the two turbans together and brought the drowning man back to the ground and saved his life.
9. Sikh volunteers gathered together to help stranded people during the 2015 floods in Mumbai.
2015 was a devastating year for Mumbai as thousands and thousands of people were left stranded on train stations after floods hit the metropolitan city. Several Sikh volunteers from a number of NGOs came together and visited different train stations to feed the stranded people who had nowhere else to go.
10. United Sikhs helped victims after the terror attack in Paris.
2015 was a dark year for Paris when the city witnessed suicide bombings and mass shootings which left the city in a devastated state. United Sikhs is a civil rights and humanitarian non profit organization which is also U.N. affiliated group and it came forward and opened its doors to people seeking shelter, food and safety. They even provided free rides to Parisians and organised blood donation drives for those in need.
11. A Sikh man took off his turban to save a bleeding child’s life.
A Sikh man is prohibited from taking off his turban in front of people but that did not stop this young man from Auckland to ignore religious protocol when he came across a child who had met with a road accident. The 22-year-old Sikh man, Harman Singh came running towards the child’s rescue when he overheard the accident and without hesitating, took off his turban to control the child’s bleeding head.
