According to Times Of India "Danraje, a 53-year-old Nepalese woman langushing in jail for the past 10 years, broke down on Wednesday when she learnt she was free to go home. Convicted under the Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, she was lodged at Nari Bandhi Niketan since 2005. Her 10-year sentence got over six months ago but she was serving another year because she could not pay the Rupees 1 lakh (about $1505.28 USD dollars) fine imposed on her. She had arranged for the money but fell short of Rupees 12,500 (about $ 188.16 USD dollars). 'Besahara Mukti Sanstha', a city-based Sikh organization, on the occasion of Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, paid her dues.
"God will certainly reward those who came to my rescue," said Danraje in broken Hindi with tears in her eyes. The organization paid Rs 2.4 lakh in all to secure the release of Danraje and 49 other prisoners like her who were serving additional time due to shortage of money to pay fine imposed on them. Prisoners released included men and women and hailed Lucknow, Barabanki, Hardoi, Etawah, Kanpur and Fatehgarh.
Ramwati, 44, of Aligarh, was sent to jail under dowry and murder charges 10 years ago. She had not even in her dreams thought that she would be released without completing the additional term of four months as she did not have a single penny to pay the fine of Rs 2,000 (about $ 30.10 USD dollars). "God hears the prayers of all and even the poor and underprivileged can be lucky at times," she said.
