Low-income families receive holiday help from Sikh-American group

According to mynewsla "More than 500 low-income families in Pacoima will receive holiday help Saturday from a Sikh-American non-profit organization.
The Holiday Community Food Drive takes place from noon to 2 p.m. at the Sikh Temple, or gurdwara, at 9989 Laurel Canyon Blvd. It is hosted by Khalsa Care Foundation.
During the event, which will include a warm vegetarian meal, giveaways, games and a raffle, organizers and volunteers will distribute free bags of food, toiletries and amenities, clothes, toys and more to the hundreds of families gathered.
Confirmed guests include representatives from the offices of Congressman Tony Cardenas, L.A. City Councilman Felipe Fuentes, state Sen. Robert Hertzberg, and LAUSD Board Member Monica Ratliff.
“We are excited to host this event each year for local families in need” said Surinder Singh, member of the Sikh community and KCF secretary. “We have a food drive at our temple every Friday, but this event is our largest because it draws hundreds of families,” he added.
The Sikh-American community holds as one of its core tenets the importance of community service. In the past it has provided food and needed items to the Fred Jordan Mission on Skid Row, but in recent years the community has looked to support local families and neighbors in Pacoima through this holiday community event at its Sikh temple.
Sikhism is the world’s fifth largest religion with more than 20 million followers around the world.
