Brampton celebrates Sikh Heritage Month

According to Brampton Guardian "BRAMPTON – To recognize the contributions of Sikh members of the community, the City of Brampton is celebrating Sikh Heritage Month during April.
In 2013, Ontario proclaimed April as Sikh Heritage Month to acknowledge the community’s important role in the province’s growth and prosperity.
“By proclaiming the month of April as Sikh Heritage Month, the City of Brampton recognizes the important contributions Sikh Canadians have made to our social, economic, political and cultural fabric,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey. “Sikh Heritage Month is an opportunity for all to celebrate and raise awareness.”
April is an important month for Sikhs around the world as it marks Vaisakhi – the Sikh New Year and the formal creation of the Khalsa and the sacred articles of faith.
The city will host a celebration at city hall on Wednesday, April 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. All Brampton residents are invited to participate.
“I’m very pleased that the City of Brampton has proclaimed April as Sikh Heritage Month and it will now become a permanent part of our yearly event calendar,” said Gurpreet Dhillon, Ward 9 & 10 city councillor.
“Sikhs have been a part of Ontario for more than a century and they continue to make meaningful contributions to our community. From academics to athletics, politics, business, charity and community service, Sikhs are important members of Brampton’s multicultural society.”
