IPOH: Members of the Sikh community here were all smiles recently after receiving 400,000 Malaysian Ringgit (about 130,208.40 American dollars) in aid from the Perak state government.
The presentation ceremony was hosted at Greentown Gurdwara and officiated by state executive councillor, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who said it was government policy that no race or minority group be left out of its assistance programmes.
"The 400,000 Malaysian Ringgit (about 130,208.40) aid had been an annual contribution by the state since Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir became Menteri Besar," he said, noting that Barisan National delivered its promises to the rakyat.
"The Federal government had disbursed a total of 21 million Malaysian Ringgit (about 6,835,941 American dollars) for the Sikh community since 2009. The money was channelled through various programmes which benefited the Sikhs," Dr Mah added.
Notable allocations included 5 million Malaysian Ringgit ( about 1,627,605 American dollars) the development of the Punjabi language and 3 million Malaysian Ringgit (about 976,722 American dollars) for youth development through the Sikh Naujawan Malaysia.
"Perak under Zambry has allocated about 2 million Malaysian Ringgit (about 651,042 American dollars)since 2009 and it is the only state in Malaysia that has an annual budget allocated just for the Sikh community," said Dr Mah, who also handed out land approval letter to Greentown Gurdwara."
