Nishan-e-Sikhi Charitable Trust to protect endangered flora

According to Punjab Newsline "The Nishan-e-Sikhi Charitable Trust has decided to help protect endangered medicinal and fruit trees at its in-house horticulture garden-cum-plant nursery.

Environmentalist Baba Sewa Singh of Khadoor Sahib is running the garden under his supervision. Baba Sewa Singh is the chairman of the Trust and is helping the environment wing to identify and protect endangered trees and plants by collecting their seedlings and growing them in nurseries. Trees like moringa, which have medicinal properties, are being grown and taken care of.

“There is an urgent need to protect these trees and plants otherwise they would be soon extinct," said Baba Sewa Singh about the Trust’s initiative, adding that the Khadoor Sahib horticulture garden has over 40 varieties of fruit and medicinal trees.

Giving details, Baba Sewa Singh said the Trust had promoted moringa, which is popularly known as miracle plant during the recent Kisan Mela organised by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, where nearly 2,000 saplings were given the university for free plantation. Moringa is said to check blood pressure, is good for heart ailments, provides relief from joint ache and constipation, helps in enhancing hemoglobin content in the blood and is beneficial for over 300 other diseases.

Apart from this, the Trust has also planted over three hundred thousand trees along a 300-kilometer (186.41 miles) stretch besides along roads, hospitals and school complexes across Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi."
