Manjung's oldest 'gurdwara' celebrates 88th anniversary

The oldest Gurdwara Sahib in Manjung district celebrated its 88th anniversary recently.

About 250 members of the Sikh community gathered for thanksgiving prayers at the Gurdwara Sahib in Jalan Menon here.
The elders took turns to recite the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, throughout the one-day event. Lumut member of parliament and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha officiated the event.
Kong was welcomed by president Dr Mohan Singh and vice-president Gopal Singh.
Also present were the Gurdwara Sahib's management committee secretary Kaldeep Singh and board of trustee member Dr Manjit Singh.
After paying obeisance Guru Granth Sahib, Kong spoke to the audience in a smattering of the Punjabi language, much to the delight of the guests.
The Sikhs arrived in Malaysia more than 100 years ago.
Members of the community have contributed immensely to the country since their arrival, with many of successive generations becoming top achievers in many fields including academia, sports and business.
"Many left Sitiawan for greener pastures but I played hockey alongside the Sikh boys during my schooldays," Kong said.Kong pledged a donation of RM20,000(Malaysian Ringgit, which is about 6,519.96 American Dollars) to the development fund for improving the living quarters of clerical staff and kitchen facilities. Mohan expressed appreciation for Kong's support on behalf of the community.
